A quick look back on Spring 2022 by Sydney Weaver and Jacob Wissinger of The Summit

The Summit previously featured many articles and photo stories relating to student life and RMC sports. As the new school year begins to ramp up, we hope to look back on last year’s content and make this year’s even better. 

On the sports side, we highlighted the women’s basketball team, who made RMC history at the NAIA National Championships. Last year they were the first Rocky WBB to win 29 games, ending their historic season in the fourth round of the 2022 Championships. This year there are some exciting new team members, including transfer students Ky Buell from Cheyenne, WY, and Tynesha Parnell from Portland, OR, both in the guard position. Illiana Moran, a freshman point guard from Richland, WA, is another exciting addition who signed in early June 2022. 

The football team also had a successful season, only falling to Montana Tech in the regular season. They lost to Montana Western in the playoffs but still earned the conference title. The team quickly bounced back and began preparing for the Fall 2022 season in early spring. Many familiar names are returning for another season, including quarterback Nathan Dick and the entire starting offensive line. Nolan McCafferty, Prince Johnson, and Kyle Frazier are returning linebackers. Also, Ty Reynolds, Brail Lipford, and Kaysan Barnet are back for more as the defensive secondary. 

As our sports team refresh and refocus, Rocky’s other factions and groups have their own endeavors about which they are excited. Last year, Rocktivities ramped up their school events, including Rocky’s first-ever Prom in the Fortin Center. Student-athlete Bergitte Varne captured the night on film and shared her experience at her first American school dance. 

Rocktivities and Outdoor Recreation return after a year of noteworthy programming, and big things are expected. The theater has many productions lined up this semester following a strong line of productions. Pride and Prejudice will be their first show, and auditions were held at the end of August. 

The Summit also featured articles highlighting current politics in Billings, along with events like the Pride Parade and gallery shows in Rocky’s Ryniker-Morrison Gallery. This year The Summit has some new tricks, including a new website, staff positions, and digital media. In the search for new platforms on which to share news, our new TikTok page is currently in the works.
